Essay

Title: Choice of Books

As it is impossible to read more than a very small fraction of the immense number of books now in existence, the proper choice of books is a matter of great importance. As popular writer lately drew out a list of what were in his opinion the hundred best books to read. But although all that Sir John Lubbock has to say on any question of general interest is sure to be instructive and deserves serious consideration, it would be idle to suppose that the hundred books that seem best to one particular person can be the best for every other individual. The list he made out may be about as good a list as could be devised for persons of his own character and education, but must be modified by each of us in accordance with our own tastes and the end we seek to obtain by reading.

The chief end for which a young student studies books is almost always success in examinations, for the attainment of which success he sometimes sacrifices more important ends. He will therefore be inclined to neglect general reading, and only care to obtain from his teacher a list of the books that will help him in the work of mastering the prescribed course of study. When he leaves college, if he has acquired in the course of his education a taste for reading, he will probably aim at the wider object of increasing his culture, and at the same time he ought to be anxious to choose such books as will not only increase his knowledge, but also make him a better and happier man. In making his choice he will have to take into consideration his own intellectual tastes and of the nature occupation by which he earns his subsistence.

Owing to differences in these matters the intellectual food of one man may be another’s poison. For instance, a book containing the records of minute observation of bees and ants, which would be full of interest to a scientific mind like Sir John Lubbock’s, might be so utterly distasteful to a person fond of poetry or abstruse metaphysics, that it would be foolish waste of time for him to try and understand it. Even men of similar taste may, owing to differences in their circumstances, find it expedient to choose very different courses of reading. Of two persons equally addicted to philosophy, one has light work and such an abundance of spare time that he may profitably sketch out for himself a regular course of philosophical books, while the other is engaged in such hard brain work every day in his professional calling, that it would be unwise for him to employ his leisure hours in any difficult study. Those who are unfortunately compelled to expend the whole force of their intellects on their daily work must content themselves with such light literature as is afforded by the novelists and the poets and the columns of the daily press. If they attempt more, they are likely to ruin their health by overtaxing their brains.

Even those who are required by prudence to avoid philosophy and science, and have to confine themselves to light literature, must not, however, think that it does not matter what they read. For them, and for all others who are by circumstances limited to a narrow sphere of study, the best rule to follow is that laid down by Emerson, that we should never ready any but famed books. If this rule were more generally observed, we should not find so many readers of fiction in this country wasting their time over the novels of Reynolds, before they have read the great works of Scott. Thackeray, Dickens, and George Eliot.

It has been objected that, if the rule we are recommending has been followed in the past, no book would ever have be come famed. thus is a valid objection against the universal acceptance of the rule. But, as there is no fear of its ever being universally accepted, and as there is a large class of clever literary men whose business it is to examine all new books and form an opinion upon their merits, the majority of mankind in planning a course of reading for the few hours they can spare for self culture cannot do better than follow Emerson’s precept.

Title: Child Labour

Wordsworth has said: “The child is father or the man.” Children are our future. Now when they are so important, we must realize what are doing for them. Have we succeeded in providing them the basic necessities of life such as education and health care? Although the government NGOs and other organizations are busy in solving the problem of child labour yet nothing seems to have come out of their work. Poverty is the main case of this failure. The poor parents are forced to push their children into practical life at an early age. Such children face a life of hardship and deprivation.

Children can be seen working everywhere. They work in small hotels, tea-stalls, as domestic servants, sweeping floors in small industrial workshops, office boys and staff assistants. They are seen cleaning cars parked on roads, polishing shoes, selling goods and many other such odd jobs. There are about two million Families in Pakistan living in bondage in various sectors. Of these nearly eight million are children. The main sectors in which the children are made to work are the agriculture sector, the brick kiln industry, carpet weaving and domestic service. These children earn money for their families. They are deprived of the joy of childhood. They cannot go to school to get education. Because of continuous overwork they fall a victim to various diseases. Most of them suffer from malnutrition.

The government and non-government organizations (NGO’s) should take some steps to tackle with this problem of child labour. The government should enact a comprehensive law for the elimination of child labour from its very roots It should create a welfare fund exclusively for the development and welfare of children. It should declare that child labour below fifteen years of age is a criminal offence. Non-government organizations must support people’s struggle for justice and emancipation. They should supplement government’s efforts for the welfare of children. They should work to influence and encourage rich people to donate funds for building hospitals clinics, and purchase of medicines for children. Child Labour is a curse. We must work to get rid of it at all costs.

Atom For Peace

Atom is the smallest unit of an element. It is a system composed of a charged nucleus and a number of electrons. The electrons travel in orbits about the nucleus. Now when an atom is broken, it releases tremendous energy. In this way atom has become a source of energy. The discovery of Atomic Energy is one of the greatest scientific discoveries of the present age. We may use or misuse this power. We may use it for destructive or constructive purposes. If we use it for the settlement of our disputes the whole of mankind will perish as a result. If we are sensible its use, we may have a better and happier world. In the constructive sphere, the atomic energy can work wonders.

The use of atomic energy for medical purposes can cure those diseases which were once considered incurable. Radium can be used in the destruction of abnormal tissues and cancer. Radio-therapy is an important branch of medical science. Superfluous cells are destroyed once for all. The isotopes of sodium, potassium, bromine and iodine will go a long way in tracing the origin and cause of many diseases. This saves man from the cruel clutches of a slow and painful death. In this way, the atomic energy has alleviated the human sufferings. Medicine and surgery owe a deep debt of gratitude to scientists who discovered the secrets of Atomic Energy: In the sphere of industry also, the atomic energy is going to play a very important role. Coal and petrol supply of the world is being gradually exhausted. The time is not far when they may not be available. Without them electric current cannot be produced. Now atomic energy may be used in the generation of electric current. Factories will get abundant Co) quality of electricity to produce things on a large scale. In the U.S.A.,- a large number of big and small firms are harnessing atomic energy for securing cheap production Electronic machines and computers are being used in the process of metal working, mineral processing, machine designs, glass making, textile manufacture, plastic and paper processing electrical equipments rubber and cement.

In the field of agriculture, atomic energy will be of great help to the farmers. Atomic explosions can level the hills and mounds. The land so made available can be used for the cultivation of crops. Crops can be ripened within a shorter period with the help of atomic-energy. The yield of grain per acre can be doubled the original one. Moreover atomic energy can prevent the pests of harmful bacteria. In this way food problem can be solved.

Lastly, we come to the use of atomic energy for transport purposes. With the help of atomic energy, the means of communication can be made swifter and more reliable than at present. Trains, cars, trucks, ships, Submarines aeroplanes missiles and rockets can all be worked by atomic energy. Thanks to the power of Atom, the scientists are planning voyages to the moon Soon inter-planetary voyages will become a reality in the near future.

I visited the Radio-Station Lahore, last week. My friend brought two passes one for visiting the Radio Station and the other for admission to one of his programmes. This programme was broadcast in the presence of an invited audience.

I accompanied my friend at eight in the morning. We reached the Radio Station at half past eight. It is a big and beautiful building, neat and attractive. It has a large reception hall. One can hardly keep account of the rooms. There are many signboards and name plates displaying the names of the sections and their officers.

For the first time I saw the announcer’s room. It is soundproof. No sound of any kind can enter its doors. I also saw the recording room where a programme was being recorded. I also visited the drama section. The rehearsal of a play was going on there. It was a very interesting experience to see the actors working hard to catch and convey the spirit of the play.

Next we went to the section which keeps everything going over the air without a fault. It was the technical section. Engineers were busy here, looking after numerous machines. They make the different channels work. The transmitters work faultlessly because of these people.

After having a round of these sections we come to the place where we were to watch the programme. It was a spacious room with a small platform. The artists were occupying the platform while the rest of the room was occupied by the audience. Soon we heard the voice of the announcer who announced that the programme was going to start Immediately the programme started. It was a humorous skit, packed with fun and laughter. The show lasted for fifteen minutes. It was a highly enjoyable programme.

At its end we came out. I had now seen the Radio Station and watched a live programme also. I, therefore, came home satisfied and the memory of that day is still fresh in may mind.

There was a long queue and I had to wait for some time till my turn came. There was a great hustle and bustle at the platform. It was a busy place. Some people had come to receive their friends and others to see them off. The train had arrived and I was shocked to see that every compartment was packed to its capacity. It was an uphill task to board the train but somehow or other I managed to get into the compartment through the window and luckily got a seat near the window. After half an hour the train steamed off and I heaved a sigh of relief.

The train was running at full speed. I peeped out of the window and enjoyed the natural scenes and sights outside. At every station some people got in and some got down. I could not sit comfortably throughout the whole journey. At last the train reached my destination and I felt relief. My clothes were spoiled and I changed them. The memory of the journey still hovers in my mind.

One day as I was returning from the play ground. I saw on the way a house on fire. I rushed towards the burning house. When I reached there, I saw many people outside the house. Some of them were pouring buckets of water on the fire; others were throwing sand and dust. It was a pitiable scene.
