Essay Title: The Value of Games in Education

Other Titles for the Essay:

  • Importance of Games
  • Games as essential part of Education

Education aims at full development of the human personality. The human personality has several sides and it is the purpose of education to develop all these sides so that the individual may attain his full stature. Man has a body, a mind and a spirit. Accordingly education aims at the physical development, and the spiritual and moral development of man. It is a very narrow view of education to think that education merely gives knowledge to a human being and thus fits him for the purpose of earning his livelihood; but education does much more than this.

Education cannot ignore the physical side of man. Man has been blessed with a beautiful body. Poets, painters and sculptor have gone into reputes over the human body and have tried to depict it in their art in many ways. Games are a mean of keeping the body healthy and fit. Physical fitness and freedom from all kinds of ailments are the desire and ambition of every human being. Indeed, good health is first condition of happiness in life. Those who play games generally maintain good health. Games are an excellent means of bodily exercise.

Apart from building the body games are an excellent recreation or pastime. Education teaches a man the need and value of recreational activities. Education does not approve of the scholar who keeps poring over books all the time. Recreation is necessary. And games are among the most interesting recreations in the world. The essence of a recreation is that it should refresh both the body and the mind, and provide a means of escape from one’s professional or scholarly pursuits. When one is playing golf or billiards or badminton or table-tennis, one becomes forgetful of every, thing else and gets absorbed in the games. Thus area diversion not only for the players, but also for the spectators, because of the great interest that create.

Games are not just a diversion for the mind; they even provide a kind of training for the mind. Most games today are a matter of high skill and ripe judgment. Hockey, football, cricket and other games are not just a matter of physical exertion and exercise. Proficiency in these games is a matter of long practice. The player must acquire the art of playing a game. Every game therefore, contributes to the development of the mind and the judgment of a player. Good players show a lot of mental alertness and ingenuity in the course of their play.

Fair play is a noble moral quality when practiced in political dealings. The quality is best inculcated in human beings through games. The habit of fair play makes a man love honesty, integrity and justice which are great moral qualities. Games also teach the lesson of accepting a defeat on the play field with a smiling face. A defeated player shakes hands with his victorious opponent and even offers him congratulations. Defeat does not dishearten or depress a true sportsman. On the contrary it provides an incentive, for a greater effort. This lesson also is bound to prove useful to a man in the wider sphere of life. Life has its misfortunes, woes, failures, but a man with a tough character is not daunted by these. Games make a man ought and thus enable him to withstand the “slings and arrows of fortune. Games teach certain other lesson as well. They teach or the spirit of mutual cooperation; they teach the value or united effort; they teach the necessity of always obeying to orders of the captain or the leader. All these are valuable lessons prepare man to live correctly and nobly. Education aims at building up character, and character includes all the qualities mentioned above. Thus the value of games in forming and moulding character is very great. Education aims too, at developing qualities of leadership in human beings. The qualities of leadership are developed most effectively and fruitfully through game.

Essay Title: Students and Politics

“Politics is the refuge of scoundrels”, said Dr. Johnson. In fact a politician if he wants to be a success should either be a rogue or becomes a rogue after entering politics. It is not possible for an honest man to remain in politics for a long time because one has to tell lies, make false promises and think of one’s own interest. Despite these negative aspects of politics it has glamour and attraction. A number of people with the remote hope of coming to the top ruin their careers. Moreover politics is so much time consuming that it is not possible for a person to devote attention to anything else.

By keeping the above mentioned aspects of politics, we can say that students should not take part in politics. The primary duty of the students is towards their education; they should not indulge in politics because it will divert their attention and make them to follow the wrong path. If they neglect their studies their whole life will be unhappy. Politics would create a tension in their mind and they would always be thinking of staging a show-down of the other party. On the other hand studies need a very balanced and patient approach.

By bringing politics to the universities and colleges we will make them unsuitable for helping the nation to progress. Young people are enthusiastic, so is their zest for bringing certain changes. They do certain things which may not be in the larger interests of the country. Politics if indulged in, immature people may endanger democracy. So it is said that the students being immature their thinking should never indulge in politics because it is not in the national interests.

Students can easily be exploited by the politicians for their person ends. They try to utilize the youth force for their personal benefit. This tendency is also not conductive to the welfare of the nation. This type of exploitation generally results in violence. In fact the students are not so much interested in politics as the politicians want them to be. The politicians generally try to pick up one or the other problem concerning universities or colleges and make the students to agitate against it. The worst part of it is that the college and the university teachers are themselves politicians or they have political affiliations. So in order to win favour of their patrons they try to make capital out of the situation. Till this interference by the politicians in the affairs of the universities or colleges is not stopped it may not be possible to weed out politics from universities and colleges. So students will stop taking part in politics if the politicians observe the code of conduct and do not keep their personal interests in mind.

Some may say that complete indifference to politics will make the students politically ignorant. On the other hand in a democratic state citizen must be politically awake. They may infer that till students take part in politics they will not be acquired of good citizen. They should understand politics though they should not take part in it. College unions create unhealthy atmosphere but unfortunately these are patronized by the political parties. Educational institutions should be completely free from politics.

Other Titles for the Essay:

  • My Best Teacher
  • Qualities that a Teacher should have
  • The Teacher I Like Most

In College, I have found an ideal teacher. Mr XYZ is a young man of 35, with sound health and sound mind. He is really a man of intellect and intelligence. He is the store-house of knowledge and wisdom. Sometimes I wonder how he has acquired much knowledge and learning. While in the class he is a strict disciplinarian. He teaches sincerely enthusiastically. He explains till every student is satisfied. His method of teaching is very good. His sound arguments, explanations and well-knit thoughts make the students listen to him most attentively. He keeps the class lively and in good humor.

He does not allow any kind of boredom or idleness to descend upon the class. His witty remarks are really pleasing and delightful. Over and above, he is a good sportsman and an acknowledged athlete. That is why he is very much interested in games and sports. He always instructs students “to play while play and study while study”. He himself is a good debater and keeps the audience spell bound by his powerful oratory. He has mastery over various subjects. But his study of English literature is so deep and vast that he is held in high esteem by the students and, the staff alike.

He is an industrious teacher and takes pains while teaching. He is the master of style and as Ruskin has said “Style is the man”, his lucid language. sound knowledge and a good background of the subject make him one of the most admirable teachers of the institution. He is very kind and sympathetic towards the poor and intelligent students. Students love him and like him because of his sterling character and other qualities of head and heart. His wit and wisdom is a subject of discussion. On the whole in College, I have not my ideal teacher but a great philosopher, friend and guide as well.

Title: Travelling As A Part Of Education

Travelling has always been regarded as a part of young one’s education. In olden days it was a tradition in Europe that after completing their academic career young men of high families were sent abroad to get training in practical life.

Travelling gives us first-hand knowledge, which books cannot provide. “Books are a mighty bloodless substitute for life,” says Stevenson, and can impart only second hand knowledge at the best.” But while travelling abroad, one gets accustomed to bear – hardship. He learns the lesson of self-dependence and self confidence. Thus, travelling gives an excellent training for building one’s character.

Travelling also brings about an understanding between different nations and links them together in close culture relations. Our world has become one big family on account of the ease and speed provided to us by new means of travel. Goodwill missions of one country visit another country. In recent years many such missions have come to Pakistan from various countries of the world, and the results are very encouraging.

Travelling also serves as a true test for one’s strength of character. Our love for good and dislike against the evil depend largely on public raise and blame. At home there is a check of elders, and either out of their fear or due to social checks, we regulate our conduct in accordance with the rules of decency. These checks are absent in a foreign land where no one knows us. Thus, if we can show fellow-feeling, courage, generosity, and goodness while travelling among strangers, it means that we really have a strong character.

World’s great travellers, men like Ibnai Batuta, Columbus, and Saadi Shirazi, have been men of great renown. They acquired a knowledge above men through travels and became great discoverers, poets and experienced men of the world.

Thus, we may conclude, in every land and through all ages, the importance of travelling has been realized. Therefore, our educationists as well as our social institutions, should give due importance to this aspect of human life.

Title: When The Parents Are Angry

My parents are very gentle but they are not gods. They get angry sometimes but it is for a very short while. The anger of mother and father is of different type. Whereas my mother gets angry very often, my father is cool and clam. My mother is working lady and has to work on two fronts. She has to cook food, clean the kitchen and wash the clothes. She has also to reach office early. She gets tired and irritated. I know her mood and when she starts snubbing my father. I bolt myself in the bath-room. When she cools down. I come out silently as if nothing had happened. She has the habit of nagging every one. I have got used to it. When mother works hard in the kitchen, my father sits in the ‘drawing’ room quite relaxed.

He gets angry once in a year or some time, even longer than that. When he is angry, he becomes the god of fire. His eyes burn, his muscles twitch and he is ready to give vent to his anger everywhere. The first victim of his anger is my elder brother. Papa catches him by the ear and pulls it so hard that he starts crying. If the mother is around, she will jump in the fray. She will save him at the risk of getting beaten herself. My turn came only once. I had secured a big zero in Mathematics and added the figure eight raising it to eighty. My father was very happy to see the report card and promised to buy me a new bat. Suddenly the bell rang and my teacher spoke on the other side. He had knowingly awarded me zero because he wanted to give me tuition. I do not know what transpired between them. I heard my papa saying that in the report book it is eighty.

I wanted to jump over the wall or escape in any other direction. There was no help around. Mother had gone to the market. Elder brother was also not at home. I was caught unaware. My father banged the receiver and called for me angrily. I was already in the bath-room and had decided not to open it till mother was back home. My father kicked the door angrily and it opened. I feel a burning sensation in my ear when I write these lines. No one could save me from his anger. My mother had to apply all types of first aid to soothe the swelling on my skin.

Title: The Sailor and his life

A sailor is one who knows how to work in a sailing ship. Nowadays there are not many sailing ships left, for their place has been taken by steam-ships. And an old sailor would say that the crews who work on steamships are pot sailors at all, and know nothing about seamanship, or the management of ships.

Before steamers were invented, all ocean ships were sailing ships; that is, they were moved by the wind blowing their sails. There was different kind of ships. The biggest were ships and banquets, three-masted vessels; then two-masted ships, called schooners and brigs. In the navy, the largest were called men-of-war; smaller but faster vessels were cruisers; and there were many more.

These ships differed not only in size and the number of their masts, but also in the number and shape of their sails, and their ropes — that is, their rigging. And it took long experience for a sailor to know all these points, the names and uses of the hundreds of different ropes, and the dozens of different sails and how to furl and unfurl them, and when. The sailor, too, had to know the signs of the weather so that the might know when-storms were coming; and he had to study the charts, and to know where it was safe to go — though this part of the work was the job of the captain and officers more than that -‘he common sailors. Nowadays the chief workers on a steamer are the engineer; the “sailors in the old sense, though there are still sailing ships in use.

A sailor’s life is a hard and rough one and it is dangerous. We landsmen have little idea what it must be to climb the tall masts in a storm to furl the sails, when the ship is rolling and pitching like a mad thing, the wind is icy cold, the rain is pouring down, and it is pitch dark. And sailors are always in danger of shipwreck or sinking in a storm of fire, or of dying of thirst in a calm.

Yet the sailor is a brave and jolly fellow. He often grumbles; but he loves the sea-life so much that he will not leave it. He sings.

“And white waves heaving high my lads,
The good ship tight and free
The world of waters is our home.
And merry men are we.”
