Title: The Snake Charmer

Snake-charmers are a class by themselves. They go about from place to place, displaying ir snakes which they keep as a precious treasure. No one knows from where they come and where they go. Probably they have no fixed habitation.

They have a basket which they sling on their shoulders, and in-which they keep their pet snakes. The vina is their constant companion, on which they play sweet tunes, which madden the serpents.

Promise them a pie, and they begin to play on the vina. Their Ida in modulating and controlling breath is wonderful, and the drawling music which they produce has a strange fascinating Influence.

When the charmer thinks his music has produced its effect on the snake, he will empty the pot or the casket, in which he keeps on the ground, and you will see a curled up thing. It lies on the ground lifeless, and he begins to rouse it by touching it with a stick, or proding it with the thin end of his vina. The lifeless thing now uncurls itself and begins to hiss and dash the charmer.

Sometimes it rushes at the spectators to their great fright. The dance of the cobra when it stands erect and spreads its hood is very amusing. Sometimes the charmer would even make the snake bite him, but he usually carries snakes whose poisonous fangs have been broken. He pretends to possess charms with which he can make these dangerous things harmless.

It is very difficult to understand this mysterious being. You can’t believe all what he says, and yet you cannot deny that he is a very clever man. His eyes are always red, and he has a very wild and frightful appearance. He certainly takes some strong intoxicating poison; otherwise you cannot explain the weird look of his eyes.

We reached Canal, at 11.00a.m. There was a heavy cavalcade (rush) of people. The banks of the canal were occupied by the visitors. We picked a place under a banyan tree and sat on there. We also took with us all the paraphernalia of lunch. We had our lunch to our heart’s content. Then we listened to music. As we were lost in the sweet music of our transistor, we heard loud cries. I immediately rushed toward the canal and saw to my shock and surprise that a boy was drowning. He was crying for help.

I immediately jumped into the water and swam to wards the drowning boy. I caught hold of the boy after a great struggle and dragged him towards the bank. He was in a semiconscious state. When I saw him closely I was surprised to know that he was at one time my class fellow. He was then given medical aid and after some time he regained consciousness. I was delighted to see him recovering. My joy knew no bounds because I had saved the life of a boy who happens to be my friend. This day was a day of great joy and happiness. Not only did I secure second position but also did a brave and noble act by saving the boy from going into the jaws of death. This day, never-the-less will go down in my life as one of the happiest day.

Technical Education

According to human needs, education can be divided into three parts: Social or political education: Spiritual Education; Vocational or Technical- Education. Education that teaches us how to live in a society is called social or political education. Education that develops our personality and character may be termed as Spiritual Education. Then, education that teaches us how to earn our living is named as Vocational Education. Technical education is a branch of Vocational Education. By Technical Education we mean education dealing with some practical or mechanical art. Technical education includes training in trade Commerce, carpentry, weaving, agriculture, medicine and engineering. Its aim is to provide instruction and training in skills that have a practical utility. It helps us to meet the needs of the Industrial Age.

Technical Education is very important in the modern age.America, Britain, France, Russia and China are rich, prosperous and resourceful because of their progress in technical education. It produces engineers, Builders, doctors, and mechanics who are very useful in an industrial society. It is the only answer to the problems of our expanding economy. It produces doers and workers. These workers make real and important contribution to the welfare of society. We are able to increase the material resources• of our country through Technical education. It promote the material prosperity and economic advancement. It has a great educational value also as it imparts dexterity quickness, attention to detail, habit of neatness and orders People begin to have faith ig the dignity of labour. We can save a lot of foreign exchange, if we have our own technical experts. In short, Technical Education makes a country Rich, prosperous, and Resourceful. But it has certain limitations also. Too much of technical education changes a man into machine, A man’s specialized knowledge makes him unfit for other jobs. So we should have an element of liberal education in Technical Education.

Nowadays Education is Lacking on the technical side.0ur schools and colleges produce men who are fit only to be clerks. Our young men run after office job. They dislike work in factories and hate to learn practical skills this is why unemployment is So widespread in the country. Poverty is due to the neglect of technical education. Our country is rich in raw material resources. We cannot reap the advantages only because we are not equipped with any technical knowledge. In this respect we must take two steps. First, more and more technical institutions should be established. Secondly, the idea of “Dignity of Labour” should be popularized. We must always keep in mind that progress is possible only through Technical Education.

By smoking we usually mean smoking of tobacco. There are many people who are addicted to the smoking of opium and other intoxicating drugs, People use various kinds of apparatus for tobacco smoking such as hookah pipes, cigars, cigarettes and cheroots. Tobacco was first brought from America to Europe. Early one day in 1492, Columbus’s shipmates saw the people of an island (now known as Cuba) smoking bundles of rolled leaves. They copied this habit and became smokers. Later on. Sir Walter Raleigh introduced tobacco and smoking in Europe. Hookah smoking was known to the Eastern kings, the physicians used it as a cure for stomach-troubles. Now, smoking is one of the most popular habits. Even women caught up this habit. Today there are 40 million addicted smokers in the 12 million in great Britain and almost as many in France. Even in poor countries, people smoke away cigarettes of 1000 million rupees every year.

The habit of smoking prevails in every part of the world. Most eminent doctors of the world have expressed thcir opinions about its bad effects yet the fashion continues. Smoking undoubtedly invigorates one’s nervous system after physical and mental exhaustion. But its after effects are really alarming. The smoke contains very small particles of Nicotine which is a deadly poison. By breathing the poisonous smoke, we injure our health; the smoke affects theiwind pipe and the lungs. Title: The Dangers of Patriotism

Patriotism means love for one’s own country. It is a noble instinct it is born with our birth and grows with our growth. Love for ones country is a natural thing. We live in it; we breathe its air; we drink its water and eat its food and we enjoy its rights. Even beasts love their homes. Traitors like Mir Jafar and Mir Sadiq are always looked down upon by their country men. And those like Tipu Sultan, Sirajuddaula, Liaquat Ali, Major Aziz, Syed Ahmad and the Quaid-e-Azam who suffer or die in a patriotic cause are ever respected by their fellow-men. Patriotism makes a man brave. It enables him to face grave dangers. It makes a man sacrifice pleasure and hope of gain. Surely, patriotism is desirable and the absence of it deplorable.

But Patriotism has a dark side too. It has certain dangers. First, it often makes a man narrow-minded and unfair. A patriot finds no fault with his country. He cannot bear the criticism on his country. To a Pakistani, everything Pakistani is good. To the English everything faultless and admirable. This attitude helps us to develop contempt towards all the other countries. The German national song opens with this “Germany over all “what we call “Color-bar” is really a perverted form of patriotism. The Japanese place themselves at the top of the list of nations.

Secondly, Patriotism is there behind all wars of aggression and all forms of imperialist Imperialist Russia, Imperialist U.S.A., Imperialist Britain and Imperialist India are examples to point. Hitler exploited the patriotism of the German Youth and Mussolini of Italian Youth. The young soldier of Japan would be snot from a cannon for the sake of his empire. Patriotism thus leads to war. People cut each others throat without any remorse in the name of patriotism. Patriotism seems to be a justification of every kind of international crime; every kind of offense against humanity.

Thirdly, within the country itself’, patriotism has its dangers too. Dr. Johnson once defined patriotism as “The last refuge of a scoundrel”. Many wicked persons turn into patriots in order to escape the consequences of their evil deeds. The selfish and ambitious Join the patriotic parties for their own ends. They flourish on the sentiment of patriotism. Under the name of patriotism, they think that they are free to do whatever they like.

Lastly, too much of patriotic feeling is apt to make a man a dreamer or an idealist. He does not set a proper value on the practical aspect of politics but it carries off his feet by emotions. Such patriots often become a constant source of danger. They do not realize the importance of a compromise in the affairs of men. Brutus in Roman history is an example of this point.

In conclusion, we may say that patriotism is not enough in the 21st century. One may love one’s country but one should try to develop an international outlook. We can love the Americans or the Russians or the Chinese without ceasing to be patriotic, True patriotism should never go against internationalism. To save himself from these dangers, a man must always remember that he is first a human being and then a citizen of some country.
